Air Balancing vs. MBS Commissioning: What’s the Difference?

Air balancing and HVAC commissioning are frequently discussed together because both deal with how a mechanical system performs in the field. They overlap in purpose, but they answer different questions. Understanding the distinction helps owners, contractors and project teams define the support a project actually needs.

Air balancing: measure and adjust airflow

Air balancing focuses on measuring and adjusting airflow through an HVAC system. Depending on the scope, that can include supply air, return air, exhaust air, outdoor air and make-up air, as well as diffusers, grilles, ductwork and air-handling equipment.

The work establishes field readings and makes adjustments where the system and project scope allow. It is especially useful when teams need to understand air distribution, pressure relationships or how airflow at one component affects another.

Commissioning: verify functional operation

Commissioning takes a broader view of how applicable systems and components operate together. It can include equipment operation, fans, dampers, VFDs, interlocks, controls, operating sequences, observed deficiencies and system verification.

A functional test may examine a response: for example, whether equipment starts, changes state or coordinates with another component when a selected control condition occurs. Commissioning is not simply a list of equipment that is powered on. It examines operation against the applicable project requirements and intended sequences.

A simple comparison

Air balancing: focus—air quantities and distribution; core activity—measurement and adjustment; common evidence—field readings and reports. HVAC commissioning: focus—functional system operation; core activity—testing, verification and deficiency tracking; common evidence—test records and verification documentation.

They are related, but they are not the same thing. Air balancing may form part of an overall effort to verify HVAC performance. Commissioning looks more broadly at whether applicable systems and components operate as required. One service does not automatically substitute for the other.

Choosing the right scope

The appropriate service depends on the building, the mechanical system, the project stage and the issue the team is trying to understand. A new project may require coordinated balancing and commissioning activities. An occupied building with uneven air distribution may begin with measurement and investigation. The project documents should guide the final scope.
